What Does Anxiety Feel Like?

Anxiety is essentially your body’s natural response to stress, where you enter "fight or flight" mode. This can happen with or without a clear trigger. Your body may tense up, your heart may race, and your senses might feel heightened, all preparing you to face a threat—real or perceived. It can be overwhelming, making you feel like you're losing control or that your body is on the verge of shutting down.

What Are 5 Symptoms Of Anxiety?

  • Constant Worry

Many people with anxiety experience persistent, negative thoughts that focus on things beyond their control. For example, before an appointment, they might worry about the possibility of getting into an accident on the way. This constant worry can lead individuals to avoid situations altogether, as they become overwhelmed by fears of what might go wrong.

  • Dizziness

When you're anxious, your breathing tends to become rapid and shallow, which can lead to dizziness. This feeling can increase your anxiety, as you might worry that something is wrong with your body. Many people experience various physical symptoms with anxiety, and during a panic attack, these sensations can be particularly frightening.

  • Heart Rate Increase

During an anxiety attack, your heart rate can spike so high that it may feel like you're having a heart attack. This can be very frightening, but it's important to remember that panic attacks are temporary and will pass. Despite how your body feels in the moment, you'll be okay.

  • Feeling Like You Need Medical Help Right Away

If you have anxiety, you may end up at the hospital because you think that your physical symptoms indicate that something is very wrong. When this happens it can be scary because you'll be in an unfamiliar place with people that are asking a lot of questions to try and help you. But, a lot of the time a trained medical professional will figure out what's going on and will help you calm down with medications or by talking you through your anxiety.

  • Not Being Able To Sleep Soundly

When you have anxiety, falling asleep can be difficult because your mind keeps racing with worries about everything that could go wrong. These negative thought patterns can make it hard to relax and unwind. Even once you do manage to fall asleep, you might wake up multiple times during the night, consumed by more anxious thoughts, which can leave you feeling drained over time.
